The first Mac clones were on display only in eyes-only corporate suites, and even Apple failed to come up with its usual sneak peak at some dazzling new invention. There wasn't much on the show floor for Mac bigots to get particularly excited about. But this year's show had fewer exhibitors than last year, which hardly seemed a positive sign for the future. MacWorld seemed more crowded than ever, perhaps reflecting the huge number of Macs and other PCs that were sold over the holidays. That feeling was bolstered in the middle of the show by a fresh round of Wall Street rumors about a possible corporate takeover of Apple Computer Inc. With Macintosh clones on the horizon and the Intel-Microsoft juggernaut rolling on, there was an air of uncertainty at the big MacWorld exposition held here earlier this month.
